How it’s calculated
Mixed numbers are turned into improper fractions first, so 1 1/2 becomes 3/2. Adding or subtracting uses a common denominator; multiplying multiplies tops and bottoms; dividing multiplies by the flipped second fraction. The answer is then simplified by dividing by the greatest common factor.
